Tricks of the Trade - Tips and Tricks Made Easy

Here are a few tricks and tips that might be useful to know:

1. If you're using spray paint to finish the surface of an item, place the aerosol paint can in a bucket of warm-water for a few minutes first, to loosen up the paint at the bottom of the can. This will provide a better, more even finish.

2. Most workbench furniture have drawers where you can store tools, but it may be practical to have your tools handy while you are working (without having them laid out all over your workspace). To do this, drill a few holes along the side of the workbench and use them for storing small hand tools such as screwdrivers. Make sure the holes are spaced at least a 5/8" apart.

3. Want to clean dirty tools? Try this to easily remove dirt: place the tool into a plastic bag and toss it in the freezer. Remove after a day and scrape off the dirt.

4. If you need a power outlet near your workspace, try attaching a power strip to the side of a workbench for power tools. Choose a power strip with the notches on the back that can be easily attached to the side of the workbench with screws.

5. If you need to put your can of paint away for future use, before closing the can, exhale into it. The carbon dioxide from your breath will prevent a layer of scum from forming around the lid.
