Typically a workbench should
be set up in the garage for obvious reasons
-
Dust and debris
- Noise
- Odors
If you are setting up a workbench
in the garage be sure to find a place against the wall closest to the
house. You will be closest to a power source and your work area will
be warmer.
Once you have set up your
workbench you should clear an area within the garage that will be spacious
and safe. If you do not have access to a garage you can use the basement
or an empty room in the house as a workspace.
Keep your tools organized!
Installing a peg board above your workbench is an ideal and inexpensive
way to keep tools organized and accessible. It should typically be a
piece of sturdy hardboard that is about ¼ inch thick with evenly
spaced holes to support hooks. Hole sizes vary between 1/8 to ¼
inch holes so make sure to pay special attention to hole size before
buying your hooks.
Installing your pegboard
Install 1”x4” boards onto the wall and then attach the pegboard
to them. The hooks will need enough space behind the board to fit properly.
For heavy items you should install plastic anchors to ensure the hooks
don’t come out along with the item you are reaching for.
You may want to get a
pegboard tray or brackets to store smaller items such screws and
nails.
- Organizing
items by size can make searching much easier.
- Storing items in glass
jars makes items easier to identify.
- Hang frequently used
tools within easy reach.
Use drawers for items
you want to keep from getting dusty.
- Paper
- Clipboards
- Pens, pencils and markers
Other drawers can be used
for small power tool accessories
- Router bits
- Drill bits
- Saw blades
- Knife blades
