The Gardener’s Tool Box Project

Building a garden tool box is a simple woodworking project that requires only a few basic tools and will take just a few hours to put together. This tool box can support your trowels, clippers, pruning shears and other basic gardening tools.

The gardener’s tool box has special compartments for seeds, plant markers as well as a place at the bottom for those short cut saws useful for cutting small branches and limbs when pruning trees and shrubs.

Materials
1 x 10 x 43” clear pine (for ends and bottom)
Gardener's Toolbox1 x 4 x 37” clear pine (for sides)
1 x 2 x 20” clear pine (for handle)
1 lb 2” galvanized finishing nails
1 4oz. wood glue
electric jigsaw

Building Instructions

Tool Box Ends - Cut two 12” pieces from your 1 x 10 clear pine board.

Bottom - The remaining piece from your 1 x 10 will be used for the bottom of the tool box so it needs to be cut exactly 18 ½” long.

Sides - Cut the 1 x 4 pine board into two pieces both measuring 18 ½” long.

Cutting the end pieces to size

  • Measure in 2 7/8" in from each top corner.
  • Then measure up from the bottom two corners 4 1/2" and mark it using a pencil.
  • Draw a line to connect the bottom marks to the top marks.
  • Cut off the four corners of the end pieces using the marking as a guide.

Making the Handle

  • Cut out the notch for the 1 x 2 handle making it slightly smaller using your jig saw.
  • Wrap a rough piece of sandpaper around a block of wood to increase the width until the handle fits snugly into place.
  • Use a little glue to set the handle in place.
  • To properly secure the handle you will need to Drill 3/32" diameter pilot holes 1/2" down from the top corner edges of each end piece and use finishing nails to lock it in place.
  • Glue and nail the ends and side piece to the bottom and fill the holes with wood filler for a perfect finish! Now you have the perfect tool box that will make your time spent gardening more efficient.

Finishing Touches – To preserve the pine tones of the wood you cold apply a clear exterior wood sealer to all the surfaces of the tool box.

Gardening Storage Tip – Seeds, soil additives and other common gardening supplies should never be stored outdoors in freezing temperatures. Load these types of items into your gardener’s tool box and store it in a warm spot throughout the winter months.
