Choosing a Workbench

Considerations for choosing a work bench:

Consider your height, hunching over your table will make your back ache more then anything. Most work benches can range between 27 ¼" and 43 ¾" high, and many are adjustable.

Ask yourself:

  • Workbench How high do I need my work bench to be?
  • Do I need adjustable legs?
  • Do I want a hydraulic lift?

You should always think about what kind of ground surface your work bench will be on. If the ground where you're working isn't levelled, you will need levellers on your work bench legs.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I need levellers on my work bench?

Think about the materials you work with and their weight. Some tables can support up to 1000 lbs, but others won't support that weight.

Ask yourself:

  • Light assembly projects or heavy?

If you're going to be working with another person at your work bench, or if you need to store big machinery on your work bench, you may need to get a larger work bench. Some benches go up to about 96" wide to comfortably accommodate two people.

Ask yourself:

  • Will there be two people working at the work bench at any given time?
  • Will I be using large equipment that needs a lot of space?

Don't forget about storage. Ask yourself what kind of space you'll be working in. If you have a really small shop, or if you're working from your garage at home, you might need as much storage space as possible.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I need a shelf on my work bench?
  • Do I need any drawers?
